I just don't think

Mum was so different. And I was so happy to see her and it was like she didn't even recognize me. She sniffed me, like an animal, and then like I wasn't even her animal.

Remus was too nice about it, making excuses for her, they were all lies. She didn't want me at all, like I was something from another species, like I was dog mess on her shoe, and what she said was more "she's a wizard, she ought to be taken care of by wizards," and I said "I'm a witch, mummy!" and then she said "I can't be your mummy any more, I have my pack and you have yours."

How could she say that?

I've been wracking my brains all morning, thinking about how to answer you. I'm so afraid of blundering and saying the wrong thing, because I know you're really hurting, and I'd never want to add to your pain. If I do, I hope you'll forgive your stupid friend boot, who only wants to help, all right?

I went back in the journals and looked at what happened when you mum and dad were bit, and maybe here are some things to think about.

First of all, maybe Mr Lupin wasn't lying, exactly. Maybe he was just trying to give you a way to think about what happened in your conversation with your mum that wouldn't hurt so much. Because he is kind. Please don't be angry if I say this, but he did save your mum's life. He refused to bite your parents himself, and he arranged with his friend for them to be bitten using the 'mercy method' instead of getting savaged to death. He couldn't save your dad, but he did save her.

Second...and this may hurt even worse. I'm sorry, but...your parents were bit to punish you. Lord Voldemort commanded it to hurt you. And if you let what your mum said sink in and break your heart, then he's achieved his purpose, you see? Don't give him that power over you, Hermione. Don't do it. Tell yourself your mum is alive, despite everything he did to try to destroy her. She was saved by the kindness of a friend. And yeah, you can't see her now, but maybe you'll see her again someday. I'm sure the Order will continue to do anything they can to help her. Maybe they'll still be able to rescue her, maybe even her whole pack!
